Imagen repelente, representación misógina heredada de los procesos y las hogueras de las grandes persecuciones que sufrieron. Sin embargo, afirma Chollet, la bruja sirve a las mujeres de hoy como figura de poder positivo, libre de toda opresión. Las nuevas generaciones de feministas parecen más influidas aún que sus predecesoras por esta figura. La bruja es a la vez víctima absoluta, para la que se reclama justicia, y rebelde obstinada y esquiva. Pero ¿quiénes eran realmente las que, en la Europa del Renacimiento, fueron acusadas de brujería? ¿Qué clase de mujeres fueron censuradas, reprimidas, eliminadas durante aquellos siglos de terror?
  • "Tremble, the witches return!", said a feminine slogan from the 1970s. Repellent image, misogynist representation inherited from the processes and fires of the great persecutions they suffered. However, says Chollet, the witch serves today's women as a figure of positive power, free from all oppression. The new generations of feminists seem even more influenced than their predecessors by this figure. The witch is both an absolute victim, for whom justice is claimed, and stubborn and elusive rebel. But who really were those who, in Renaissance Europe, were accused of witchcraft? What kind of women were censored, repressed, eliminated during those centuries of terror?
